“The Solar Decathlon is a collegiate competition, comprising 10 contests, that challenges student teams to design highly efficient and innovative buildings powered by renewable energy uplifted through proven resources and tools to help become their best at every moment in their career.”  My team participated in the Office Building Design Division of the competition.

Our team of 3 worked on brainstorming branding, event, and social media ideas, reaching out to potential collaborators, pitching event ideas to management, and following through with event promotion through the use of social media posts.

Compositive logo

Designed logo to be used on competition deliverables

Our first main task was to design our team logo. This would be used as the starting point for our team’s branding.

The name “Compositive” was derived from the words “composite” and “positive” in order to communicate that our school’s team was a culmination of students from all different backgrounds and majors that came together to achieve a memorable design product. We wanted our logo to express these two ideas.

After taking a look at the site our team was designing for, I noticed one interesting section of the building. It is a community garden area and the rings are steps that visitors interact with. Given this was a symbol for community, I was inspired to use this as reference for the logo.

Inspiration

Our team wanted our color scheme to convey a sense of peace and tranquility to match the surrounding landscape.

These colors were chosen to represent the trees and river especially.

I produced many iterations, with the team preferring the simplicity of the five inner blocks, and the varying thicknesses of the white lines.

team portraits

Designed digital portraits of our student leads

To add a unique, playful touch to the team’s final video presentation, I created digital portraits of the six main speakers that would pop up with their videos.

The background colors are featured from the main color scheme.
