During the fall semester of my junior year, I was part of a four person design team with the goal of designing a product for older adults.
We created Amity; the board game console designed to provide a fun shared experience between the aging population and their loved ones. Data shows that almost 25% of adults over the age of 65 are considered to be socially isolated. Social isolation is associated with a 50% increased risk of dementia and other serious medical conditions. Amity uses physical playing pieces and integrated video calling to provide meaningful engagement despite any distance. The secondary screen can be placed in one of two orientations and is used for video calling, in-game features, and settings. Tactile playing pieces leverage the main board’s screen to customize the piece’s functions for endless game possibilities. Even though the players may be far apart, Amity brings people together over the shared experience of a friendly game.

I created a visual breakdown of our landscape and portrait screen interfaces overtop of our product renders.
Areas are dedicated to gameplay, video interactions, and side bars that contain important settings and game assets that would normally be set aside.
amity
am·i·ty [ am-i-tee ]
n. 1. friendship; peaceful harmony
Our goal was to create meaningful connections between people, so it is only fitting that our product is named a variation of friendliness and harmony.

Legibility and variety were two important details we wanted to focus on when choosing the font for our UI.
DM Sans is a simple, clean font that is easy to read and offers multiple type settings for scenarios in need of hierarchy and emphasis.

Amity’s color palette is a softer variation of the traditional primary colors to keep with the playful, simple tone of the branding.
Amity works with a variety of games, so I designed the interfaces for Clue, Pictionary, Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, and Monopoly. These were overlaid onto product renders for context.
When the device is turned on, the name of our product, Amity, is shown and the continue button will lead you to the home screen. The user interface was created to be both easy to navigate and accessible to everyone.
For new users, the user interface will walk you through a five step device setup to customize the display to your specifications and accessibility needs. This includes font size, brightness, dexterity, and magnification.
The screen setup is followed by a two step account setup that can connect to your Google or Facebook account to help find friends and family to play with.
The home screen features ongoing and recent games played. New games can be started by tapping the yellow “new game” button, and the settings, profile, and store pages can be accessed through the home screen.
When it comes time for the player to move their second screen from one port to the other, Amity makes it easy by providing a simple instructional animation. It walks the user through the process with clear graphics, arrows, and short descriptions of how the process should look and feel.
